In the world of sports, injuries are an inevitable challenge that athletes often face. However, the typical approach of relying on rigid protocols or even the well-known principles of soft tissue injury management such as RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) and POLICE (Protect, Optimal loading, Ice, Compression, Elevation) can sometimes overlook the holistic power of emotional and mental recovery.

Introducing the principles of PEACE and LOVE as a complementary approach to sports injury recovery offers a fresh, more compassionate perspective. Rather than just focusing on the full range of soft tissue injury management from immediate care to subsequent management these principles encourage athletes to nurture their bodies with mindfulness and positivity.

Peace “Immediately after a soft tissue injury, do no harm and let PEACE guide your approach”

P = Protection

  • Avoid activities and movements that increase pain during the first 24-72 hours after injury

E = Elevation

  • Elevate the injured limb higher than the heart as often as possible

A = Avoid anti-inflammatory modalities

  • Avoid anti-inflammatory medications after 48 hours to avoid impeding tissue healing

C = Compress

  • Use taping or bandages to reduce swelling but should still allow a full range of movement at the joint

E = Educate

  • Avoid unnecessary passive treatments and medical investigations and let nature play its role

Love “After the first days have passed, soft tissues need LOVE

L = Load

  • Let pain guide your gradual return to normal activities

O = Optimism

  • Condition your brain for optimal recovery by being confident and positive

V = Vascularisation

  • Pain-free cardiovascular activities such as walking and biking to promote increased blood flow to repairing tissues

E = Exercise

  • Restore mobility, strength, and proprioception by adopting an active approach to recovery

Following the PEACE and LOVE principles is a great start to managing sports injuries, but first aid alone isn’t enough for a full recovery.
