What Is an Annular Pulley?

The annular pulleys are a series of ligaments in the fingers that play a crucial role in keeping the tendons close to the bones. These pulleys help the tendons glide smoothly when you bend your fingers, especially when gripping holds. There are five annular pulleys in each finger (A1–A5), with the most commonly injured being the A2 pulley located near the base of the finger.

When climbers grip holds, particularly those that require a lot of force like pinches, slopers, or crimps, the tendons in the fingers experience significant strain. If the pressure is too great, the annular pulley can become overstretched, torn, or ruptured.
